Autism 24/7

By | All, Autism 24/7 | No Comments

So I live Autism 24/7. I am a mother of a child who has Autism and I run an organization that helps families with individuals and families with Autism (we help other non profits-TACA,GR, ATCA and others existing programs and we also help families direct with our Pantry Program).

This last week and half has been one of the hardest weeks I have had in a long time. My son became ill and his Clostridia flared up. We didn’t know what we were first looking at and when we finally did it was a full blown flare up (I now know the red flags and warnings we had seen the weeks prior emerge). I watched my son who had been thriving weeks prior regress badly. I watched his speech become less and less (yet a handful of weeks ago he read a page from his book outloud for the first time) his body became so lethargic he didn’t even want to dress, eye contact diminished, he started to hit his head (with his hand which I had never seen), aggressive at times, stomach pain, and the list goes on… I cried everyday. Yet, I still had to work full days w the Autism Hope Alliance taking meetings from new partners and potential partners convincing them that Hope is possible for our kiddos (all while not crying on the phone knowing how so important their help is to our kiddos). I realized I don’t just turn off my computer and go home and Autism doesn’t exist anymore. I turn off my computer after my day of work and walk right into a door of what I fight for daily. There is nothing fancy about Autism I can assure you.

I am in the trenches fighting along right with every parent I fight for. I prayed a lot this week as I knew that I needed to keep my faith and stay on course. My son started on Tues talking a bit more and yesterday even more and was interested in painting again. He wanted to hang out w me and read and watch a new movie we hadn’t seen (Agent Cody Banks) last night and as I heard him laugh at the funny parts tears ran down my face. He saw the tears I couldn’t hold back and he wiped them and said, “Mommy crying” and I said, “Mommy just missed you and I love you so much!” He replied, “I love you too Mommy” then kissed my cheek so innocently not even understanding the significance of that interaction and just kept watching the movie snuggled next to me. I pray today he continues to thrive and his body continues to heal. Regression is never easy however, I never give up and I keep reading and researching. I do all I can in my power. The minute I learned he had a Clostridia flare up and yeast I decided that minute to put him on a Paleo diet. The medicines could do their job but I could do mine too. Got his bloodwork done, stool samples and urine samples in and knew I was doing all I could. Hearing Jax laugh and seeing his smile are things I will never take for granted. I know we will get thru this and I know the fight for our kiddos is so important. I am so thankful for doctors like Dr Rossignol (Jax’s doc) and others like him that recognize what is happening to our children. To me Biomedical and Diet are crucial. We can’t stop fighting even when it gets so hard you can’t breathe. We are in this together. Looking forward to the beautiful rainbow at the end of this storm.

No More Dreading Bloodwork

By | All, No More Dreading Bloodwork | No Comments

So grateful to the AMAZING Christopher Hayward! This man draws 11 viles of blood faster than anything I have seen! Always gets it right the first time! The years and years of dreading bloodwork is no more! Jax was scared today and not really in the mood as we are dealing w some bad gut stuff and a flare up and Jax is not himself. Thankful Jax’s daddy can calm him down and for the brilliance of Christopher who can get the job done without missing a beat. ‪#‎grateful‬ ‪#‎lookingforwardtoseeinglabs‬ ‪#‎nevergiveup‬

“Cheese”

By | "Cheese", All | No Comments

Love this kiddo! His smile is contagious! The other day we were on a walk in the neighborhood and he jumped in front of me and said, “Cheese.” So I naturally took a pic and laughed at this cutie… Through the challenging moments remember the moments like this.. No one said being a parent is easy… Being an Autism parent came w no instructional manual and each day is different. Each kiddo is different. Celebrate each victory! ‪#‎onedayatatime‬‪#‎nevergiveup‬

My Heart Filled with Joy!

By | All, My Heart Filled with Joy! | No Comments

Today as I watched my son do his workbook my heart filled with joy. I did all I could to fight the tears back. He was so focused and it was clear happy. It has been a short time since he has been able to even work w a pencil. He has come so far and even though has a long journey ahead, we are moving in the right direction.. Up… I am so grateful… Moments like this make up for every hard moment we have. I sooo BELIEVE in this kiddo and I will always be his biggest cheerleader!!! Go JAX Go!! Our kids are capable of growth at any age! ‪#‎nevergiveup‬ ‪#‎hope‬ ‪#‎autism‬

Go Jax Go!

By | All, Go Jax Go! | No Comments

This kiddo has come so far..I remember when he couldn’t stand the feeling of even the breeze… Now he loves our walks in the neighborhood… I love watching him run and climb on the rocks. My eyes tear up each time… I imagine most parents that don’t experience Autism would really have no idea how the simple things like taking a walk is such a miracle for us… I will never take anything for granted… There are still hard days but they are becoming more and more just hard “moments” than full days… The full days are becoming more and more watching my son grow and be happy.. This boy continues to thrive and progress at the age of 14 and I will never give up. He inspires me daily… Go Jax Go… Keep climbing!  ‪#‎hope‬ ‪#‎autism‬ ‪#‎nevergiveup‬

Save Your Seat For Autism Hope Summit

By | All, Save Your Seat For Autism Hope Summit | No Comments

Do you remember the moment your child was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder?

I do. And nothing could have prepared my son’s father and me for the devastation we experienced. Our doctor warned us to give up all hope of a relationship with Jaxson because “he won’t know the difference between you and the chair you’re sitting on.”

If you’ve endured a similar conversation with your doctor, I am here to tell you that such a future – with no hope or relationship with your child – is NOT set in stone.

If you’ve felt the overwhelm… the dread, grief and helplessness that comes with an autism diagnosis, please know that there is more than hope for you and your child…

On behalf of Autism Hope Alliance, I would like to invite you to a special online summit to bring you Hope with a Plan.

 And it’s completely free.

Powerball Dream

By | All, Powerball Dream | No Comments

So when I win the powerball tonight and have all those millions after taxes I first will be giving the Autism Hope Alliance a huge huge huge donation… Then I will work with finance gurus to have the money invested to make it grow and grow. My dream is to build communities for our kiddos to live in as they get older. Think: “The Truman Show” movie where there are communities that have markets, theatres, libraries, parks, doctors, dentists, medical clinics, nutritionists and such where our kiddos that need a little extra help can live there (in their own homes) w some help if needed and those requiring more help can have more help given to them. They can work there too. I want it to be a community where all that work in it have a huge heart and are kind to our children and our kiddos can enjoy life always no matter where they are on the spectrum. Our biggest fear often is what happens when we are gone one day…. and imagine if we could feel secure to know our kiddos are safe and happy no matter if we are here or not. A lot of our kiddos are in a happy bubble now as we protect them from the evil in the world and I would love to always protect all of our kiddos….

That’s my dream. Parents have so much to worry about, our children deserve the best always…. ‪#‎powerballwinner‬ ‪#‎putoutinuniverse‬ ‪#‎bigdreams‬

AHA Guest Blogger Elizabeth Rose Chacon – Just A Thought

By | AHA Guest Blogger Elizabeth Rose Chacon - Just A Thought, All | No Comments

Since I’m thinking a lot about the brain, just a thought:

Our brain isn’t fully developed until the age of 25, the part of the brain that develops last is where we organize, control impulse, etc. So, if you wonder why your kids just don’t remember and if you will always have to remind them to do things I want to let you know that the answer is yes. Yes, you will have to remind your child(ren) to do things, the same things every day, you will have to help with organization, often. When my mom asked, “How many times do I have to remind you?” I answered, “A lot.”  I wish I’d known that.I wasn’t being “fresh” like she thought, I was stating a fact.

So, let’s all take a deep breath and remind our kids again today to put things away, to wash up, and so on.

What’s your favorite reminder?

My favorite reminder? “I love you!”

AHA Guest Blogger Elizabeth Rose Chacon – Side Coaching

By | AHA Guest Blogger Elizabeth Rose Chacon - Side Coaching, All | No Comments

Since I started working with students in Autism Movement Therapy® I ask parents to do a very, very difficult thing: Stop “side coaching”. I know from personal experience how hard it is to stop “side coaching” because I have two boys. When they were young I hated leaving the class or leaving my kid alone to do whatever he would do. Later, I began to see the benefits of leaving the room or watching quietly.

“Side coaching” is very common in all dance classes. When parents see their child misbehaving or losing concentration you can hear the whispered shouts, like “Pay attention!” “Listen to your teacher.” “Stop talking!” A lot of dance schools don’t allow parents to be in the classroom. As a teacher, years ago in ballet or tap dance class, I preferred that the parents stay out of the dance room completely.

When my own boys were young I wanted to be there “to help”. I did a lot of side coaching. I was a lot like a “stage mom” in performance classes. I wanted MY kids to pay attention and cooperate with the teacher.  Some teachers asked parents to leave because the children would behave differently when we weren’t in the room. I didn’t like it, but I left. After a while I started enjoying the time to myself. I’d sit alone…all alone! And if I was lucky, I could talk to other adults.

My dance students now are autistic and most of them are nonverbal. Their parents have had difficulty in the past with teachers or instructors in other activities. Not all instructors have much patience for the behaviors they see. The need to protect their child, or to help both teacher and student during many activities is very strong. The parents, understandably, want to help.

Autism Movement Therapy® is a safe place for both parent and student. I will encourage and never chide the students for taking too long or not paying attention. Parents don’t have to leave the classroom, unless they want to, but I do ask them not to coach or assist their child during class. The students need to dance to the best of their ability without assistance in order to get familiar with their own body/brain connection. I need to see the behaviors in order to work with the student. My job is to help them move with me on their own. It takes time and patience. I have no deadline to meet objectives. If the student goes to the parent during the class, I ask the parent to just redirect him or her back to class.

Everybody is a role model for someone. When the children watch me, watch the others follow me, and we all dance TOGETHER the win is huge! If the children are unassisted in a group class then they start to help each other. Being helped or led by a peer is very powerful for the students. I want this to be a safe place to practice social and other skills that they have learned elsewhere. The kids are in a structured play situation with others, with friends, and I don’t think they realize that their brain is challenged so new neurons and pathways can be created to aid in speech and communication. I hope they are just having fun.

So, if you are asked to stop “side coaching” try to see the positive side. If the instructor is capable of dealing with your student, enjoy watching your child learn. If you need to leave, look for a good place to sit and relax. Remember what it was like to just sit somewhere, quietly, and do nothing?
