Kristin: I’d like to introduce Scott Smith PA he is the president of the Central Florida Functional Medicine. We’re going to be speaking about Microbiota And Autism.
Welcome Scott.
Scott Smith: Hi Kristin, great to be here today. Thanks for having me.
Very much looks forward to talking to you about this, I think this is a subject that a lot of parents don’t really understand. When we talk about the word “microbiota” what does that term mean?
Microbiota is actually a representative of a community of microorganisms both commensal and pathogenic. Which can reside within the human body, hopefully in a symbiotic way. The term can also be used to describe the collection of genes that belong to these microorganisms. This thought that these genes are of great importance to humans as our bodies alone have only just slightly more genes than a basic earthworm. When the microbiome is healthy and working symbiotically, we’re able to utilize this genetic material to our benefit.
I personally use the term interchangeably between these two meanings of both the organisms themselves and their genes…
